Join Mario in a Galaxy Far, Far Away
Who doesn’t love Mario? The iconic Italian plumber has been saving the world for more than two decades now and taking millions of gamers on new adventures. Read on to find out if this new game captures the spirit of Mario or if it is just a big flop.
Anyone who played Space Invaders as a child or teenager will automatically be familiar with the format of Mario Forever Galaxy. As soon as the graphics explode onto the screen you are hot with a feeling of déjà vu that is hard to shake. For most of the game we do not even see Mario, as he is safely stowed away inside his space ship at the bottom of the screen.
For people who have never played Space Invaders, the concept is very simple. Lines of aliens, in this case flying alien ducks, march across the screen in lines. The lines of enemies slowly advance towards the bottom of the screen. Players control a space ship at the bottom of the screen that fires at the aliens and tries to wipe them all out before they reach you ship and take you out.
As you would expect, the controls are very easy to use and the game plays out fairly smoothly. However, one of the weird things about the game is that the difficulty setting has been cranked up way too high. Not only do the crazy alien ducks advance very quickly, they also have weapons of their own and are not afraid to use them. Getting past the first level alone can be very tough indeed and younger and inexperienced players may well find that it is simply beyond them.
There have been lots of Space Invaders remakes over the years and somehow, you just expect more from a Mario game. Sure, the graphics are as good as ever, but it doesn’t really feel like much time or effort has gone into the game. after the initial thrill of being faced with a new game, the excitement wears off very quickly and gamers are sure to realise that they are simply being presented with a variation on a theme, and not a very innovative one at that.
